W5: The Future of Security and Surveillance

The Future of Security and Surveillance

Chosen Domain: Security and Surveillance Industry

Present Situation

Currently, the security and surveillance industry is rapidly adopting advanced technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and biometric systems to improve the security and surveillance capabilities. However, with the increased of connectivity, cyber threats are becoming more sophisticated, targeting on data storage and surveillance systems. Besides, privacy issues arise significantly from the use of extensive surveillance such as biometric data collection and facial recognition (Security Industry Association, n.d.). Meanwhile, the industry is facing workforce shortage due to the growing demand for skilled professionals to manage and operate advanced security systems (Price, 2021).

Future Vision

In 30 to 40 years, biometric, IoT, and AI technologies will be seamlessly integrated into the security and surveillance sector, creating a world where crime prevention is proactive and highly effective. Biometric and Internet of Things devices provide safe and personalized access to areas and data. Also, AI-powered systems can predict and prevent threats before they occur. Furthermore, high-resolution cameras and advanced drones offer real-time surveillance without compromising privacy due to strict ethical and data protection standards. Moreover, transparent policies and innovative encryption techniques maintain balance between security and privacy, promoting a free but secure society.

Creative Solutions

(i) Develop AI-driven cybersecurity systems

Security companies should create AI-powered cybersecurity solutions that can identify and react to threats in real time. These systems can analyze large volumes of data to find and eliminate threats before they cause harm. As a result, this will improve the overall security infrastructure and address the growing cyberthreats.

(ii) Develop privacy-preserving surveillance technologies

Innovative surveillance systems that preserve security while protecting people's privacy should be created by utilizing advanced encryption and privacy methods. These systems encrypt data during transmission and storage by using  real-time anonymization methods and utilize federated learning to analyze data locally. Apart from that, regular audits and transparent privacy policies guarantee adherence and foster public confidence. Consequently, this will alleviate privacy concerns and ensure data protection.

(iii) Establish training and certification programs

Security and surveillance companies should train security experts with thorough training and certification programs that focus on the newest technologies and industry best practices. This ensures qualified employees that can oversee advanced security systems. Meanwhile, solving the present workforce shortages and improving the overall effectiveness of security measures.

Justification and Implementation

(i) Develop AI-driven cybersecurity systems

Due to the increasing of cyber threats, AI-driven systems are necessary to identify and respond to cyberthreats in real-time. They can improve overall security infrastructure by analyzing big data sets, finding trends, and effectively eliminating threats. This will ensure a proactive approach to threat detection, reducing the impact of cyber attacks and hence, build a more resilient security system. Companies should collaborate with cybersecurity firms to develop AI-powered systems. Resources required are investment in AI technology, skilled cybersecurity professionals and ongoing training programs.

(ii) Develop privacy-preserving surveillance technologies

Privacy problems increase with the development of surveillance technology. It is essential to create solutions that preserve security and preserve privacy for fostering public confidence and ensuring legal compliance. Security and surveillance companies should partner with technology developers to innovate privacy-preserving solutions. Other than that, strict data protection protocols should be implemented to ensure compliance with data protection regulations. In addition, public awareness campaigns should be held to educate the public and stakeholders about the benefits and functionalities of the data protection regulations. By addressing privacy issues and ensuring data security, these solutions strike a balance between personal rights and safety.

(iii) Establish training and certification programs

Comprehensive training programs that emphasize the newest technologies and industry best practices are necessary to address the workforce shortage in security industry. Responsible companies should develop training programs in collaboration with educational institutions and industry experts. For example, they could offer training through online platforms and physical workshops. After attending those training, certifications that are recognized by the industry should be provided to participants to validate their skills on security and surveillance. On top of that, companies should also partner with educational bodies in developing training materials and investing in developing training infrastructure. As a result, the skills gap in the security industry get to addressed. It also ensures professionals are up-to-date with the latest technologies so that the overall effectiveness of the security and surveillance measures are enhanced.
