2. Present Situation: 

    Beauty industry has been growing significantly in the recent years where it has become a large, fast-moving and highly competitive market. It has become more diverse and inclusive as there are wider range of products and services to meet the consumer preferences and the beauty standards. According to the research done by D.Petruzzi's(2024), skincare had dominated the beauty market in 2023 by holding a market share of 40%. Among the several corporations in the beauty industry, L'OrĂ©al was the top beauty manufacturer in the world as in 2023. However, the beauty industry also faces several critical limitations such as producing sustainable and eco-friendly products. Also, they are demanded to improve the inclusivity of products across diverse beauty preferences by the public while also improving the regulatory and safety of the products. 


3. Future Vision:

    In the future, beauty industry would be more sustainable and inclusive. The industry would be using recyclable materials and eco-friendly formulations in the production of beauty products. Further, beauty brands would cater all ethnicities, races, skin tones, body types and gender identities by offering wider choices of products that reflect the diversity in beauty. Moreover, with the advent of modern-day technology and AI, smart devices like AI-powered devices could be used to sense and analyze individual skin and hair conditions. Everyone can get their personalized beauty solutions by creating customized skincare routines, makeup products and fragrances based on individual genetics and real-time analysis. Apart from that, due to the convenience and efficiency provided by technology, virtual try-ons might be accomplished by using virtual reality and augmented reality where consumer get to virtually try on makeup or hairstyles with personalized AI recommendations. This can make the discovery and purchasing process more engaging and intuitive than ever before which might increase the worldwide beauty market. Overall, the product development, research, marketing and supply chain would change with the advance technology and science. 


4. Creative Solutions:

(i)                 Eco-friendly packaging and smart beauty recycling revolution

    Beauty industry should design new environmentally friendly and bio-degradable packaging for beauty products. Such substances would be decomposed within its shortest time to prevent environmental pollution. Beside bio-degradable packaging, companies could also develop smart beauty recycling system where they offer refillable options for consumer to reduce waste production. Smart recycling bins and processing centres specially for beauty packaging could be considered. For example, smart identification of materials and automated sorting and processing to properly recycle the packaging to reduce contamination. As the same time, mobile apps tracking and rewards program could be implemented to raise awareness of the importance of taking care of the environment. As a result, recycling process would be more convenient as well as the environmental impact and sustainability concerns would be addressed. 


 

(ii)                 AI-powered beauty lab and diagnostics

    Beauty companies could use powerful systems that are driven by artificial intelligence to help them develop sustainable formulations for creating personalized inclusive beauty products. Other than that, new smart beauty diagnostic devices with AI could be created to identify the skin and hair conditions instantly and to perform real-time data analysis for personalized beauty products. For instance, they would be operated through mobile applications or standalone devices that could give beauty suggestions based on user’s statistics. Consequently, the absence of customization of beauty solutions and feedbacks in real time could be solved.

(iii)              Virtual beauty experience platform

    New virtual platforms for beauty experiences should be established with VR and AR features. Such applications would let the users to try their beauty products virtually without going to the store. This can be done at anytime and anywhere as long as the user have the devices and internet access. Further, users could attend online beauty consultation session at their home with the virtual beauty platforms. Thus, the inability to try products before buying and the lack of personalized consultations can be avoided. This reduces the cost and increase the efficiency in marketing the beauty products.


5. Justification and Implementation:

(i)                 Eco-friendly packaging and smart beauty recycling revolution

Beauty industry nowadays is generating a lot of waste which eventually pollutes the environment. Also, current recycling systems are not optimized for beauty packaging and the number of consumers participating in recycling programs is low.

            To implement the above revolution, material scientists and environmental experts should work together to design new biodegradable materials that are suitable for beauty products. They should also collaborate with the packaging manufacturers to make sustainable containers. For refill and recycling systems, possible kinds of containers that could be used for refill or recycle should be designed to cut down the wastes on packaging. Logistic network should also invest in developing smart bins and sorting infrastructure to properly recycle the packaging. Software development teams should launch consumer app to track the recycling programs. Beauty companies could give out rewards to the user that participate actively in reusing or recycling the containers. Besides, production and logistic teams can establish partnerships with beauty brands to create awareness to educate the consumers regarding the uses of the green packing materials or recyclable materials.

(ii)              AI-powered beauty lab and diagnostics

Today’s product development is resource consumptive and wasteful because many brands are lack of knowledge and expertise for sustainable formulation. Some of them even perform trial-and-error approach that can cause significant waste. In addition, personalization plays an important role in beauty especially on the human body. There are several people out there with unique skin and hair struggling to find the most suitable beauty products. This leads to customers dissatisfaction and might end up wasting the products they bought. Hence, AI-driven diagnostic services should be held for personalized inclusive beauty platform.

One of the implementation steps to achieve the solution is by developing AI algorithms that could analyze different skin and hair issues based on the data from dermatologists and beauty experts. For device creation, engineers and AI and machine learning experts should design and develop the diagnostic devices which are user-friendly or smartphone accessories. After that, beauty brands should partner with established labs to incorporate diagnostic services into product customization before testing with select beauty companies. After refining the algorithm based on the feedback, devices could be distributed through outlets or over the internet that specialize in beauty products accompanied by marketing promotions.

(iii)            Virtual beauty experience platform

Virtual beauty experience platforms are conducted because consumers often find it challenging in choosing beauty products without trying them first. The AR and VR applications in the platforms allow user to virtually try on products, which enhances the shopping experience and reducing the products return rates. To improve the experience, AI beauty advisors can be integrated into those platforms to provide personalized product recommendations. Moreover, beauty brands should engage themselves in partnership with these platforms to provide clients with services like virtual consultation. It is recommended that the platform should be initially promoted through beauty retailers and on the internet by using advertising campaigns.

7. Reflection: 

    The creative solutions are inspired by how fast the beauty industry has been growing and how advance technology in the future would have significantly impact the industry. Reflecting on this exercise, I have realized that the beauty, technology and sustainability could be interconnected to each other. The beauty industry has lots of room for growth and it is noticeable that how technology and the ethical practices can affect beauty in being more inclusive, more personal and environmentally friendly in the future. This exercise has made me understand how complicated the industry is and the possible ways in which it can be solved.
